About
Amelia Lynch is a ceramicist whose work explores the interplay between form, texture, and the natural environment. Drawing inspiration from geological phenomena such as rock erosion, stratification, and native flora, Lynch crafts biomorphic and geomorphic sculptures that evoke the Australian landscape. Her practice is characterised by an intuitive approach to form, combined with technical precision in glazing and surface treatments. By experimenting with oxides, stains, and glazes that crackle, crawl, and crater, she achieves painterly surfaces that mimic organic textures found in nature. Lynch’s work bridges the intuitive and the technical, reflecting her personal connection to the environment. Each piece captures the essence of the landscapes she traverses, transforming the tactile and visual experiences of the natural world into tangible ceramic forms.
She often creates sculptural pieces that are both intimate and monumental, with a strong conceptual grounding. A finalist in several prestigious art prizes, including the Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize, Lynch has exhibited widely and is represented by Arthouse Gallery. Beyond her studio practice, she is a dedicated educator, conducting workshops for a diverse range of audiences. Her passion for clay continues to inspire her teaching, community engagement, and professional practice.
Artist Statement
My ceramic practice intertwines traditional and contemporary hand-building techniques, with a focus on coil construction. This demonstration highlights the intricate process of creating ceramic forms through coil-building, emphasising craftsmanship and creativity.
Coil Construction Technique
Using long, rolled coils of clay, I layer and handshape each piece, ensuring the coils are carefully joined and smoothed to maintain structural integrity and aesthetic harmony.
This technique enables the creation of complex forms and textured surfaces that evoke the organic fluidity of nature. The meditative process reflects ceramics' rich historical roots while pushing the boundaries of modern practice.
Through this demonstration, I seek to celebrate the timeless art of coil-building, showcasing ceramics as a vital and evolving medium that balances tradition with contemporary relevance.
