Building Big: Structural and Technical Approaches to Figurative Clay

Join internationally acclaimed sculptor Beth Cavener for a two-day workshop exploring the conceptual and technical foundations of large-scale ceramic sculpture. Beth will guide participants through her process of developing a central idea, designing armatures, and building dynamic, complex forms. Day one focuses on scale, gesture, and placement as starting points, with demonstrations on sculpting, hollowing, and reassembly. Day two covers firing large works in sections, post-firing assembly, and finishing techniques. With a focus on problem-solving and expressive detail, this workshop offers unique insights into creating ambitious, emotionally powerful sculptural works.

Paperplaster Moulds

Don't miss this exclusive opportunity to learn from internationally renowned Canadian ceramic artist Trudy Golley.
Trudy will demonstrate the technique of making simple one- and two-part plaster moulds using a paper pulp and plaster mixture that she has developed called Paperplaster. During the workshop participants will make their own moulds from clay models. These moulds are suitable for press moulding and slipcasting.
This workshop is suitable for both beginners and people with prior clay experience.

Special Effects Glaze Workshop

Perth Studio Potters are delighted to welcome renowned UK potter and author Linda Bloomfield for a special effects glaze workshop.
Over two days participants will prepare a base glaze of their choice (glossy, matt or special effect) and add oxides to form colour blends. All test tiles, equipment and materials will be provided and fired in an electric kiln to cone 10.
During the follow up session Linda will give a talk covering what each ingredient contributes to the glaze. This will be followed by kiln unloading and discussion of the results.
The workshop is suitable for all levels, especially intermediate makers who already make their own glazes and are interested in developing special effects.

Recording Your Artworks: Digital photo-documentation for artists

Photo-documentation is the last step in finishing an artwork; a necessary one that, in our increasingly busy schedules, is all too often neglected. By focusing on the basic principles and methods, Paul will assist you to develop the ability to see beyond the artwork and into the image. He will demonstrate setting up the photoshoot for use with a smartphone or digital point-and-shoot camera and discuss various accessories and software that can be used to improve image quality. The point is to keep the process simple and inexpensive, …so that it gets done.

Special Effects Glaze Workshop

Cost: $480
Learn all about glaze chemistry – what each glaze material contributes to the mix, and how to adjust glazes to either correct defects or to make special effect glazes, with UK ceramist and author Linda Bloomfield.

Participants will choose, make and test their own base glaze (be in matte, gloss, or special effect), as well as using oxides to create line blends. After firing students will review, discuss, and receive feedback on their results, leaving with a better understanding on how glazes work and the knowledge to enable them to create and refine glazes on their own.
The workshop is suitable for all levels, but will be especially useful for intermediate makers who already have glaze making experience and are interested in developing special effects.
All glaze materials, and equipment are provided. Test tiles will be provided, but if you’d like to test on a specific stoneware clay, please bring your own.
Tests will be fired in an electric kiln going to cone 9.
