About
Anna Guthrie is a ceramic and mixed media artist whose practice explores the intersection of traditional craftsmanship, digital processes, and interdisciplinary methodologies.
Drawing from reflective walking, 2D creative experimentation, Guthrie employs a practice led approach to engage with the phenomenology of experience, transforming observationsof ordinary spaces and the mundane into tactile and contemplative artefacts. Her work combines ceramic printmaking, digital manipulation, and layered imagery, creating pieces that bridge material experimentation and sensory exploration. Guthrie has received recognition as a finalist and highly commended artist in the Queensland Regional Art Awards, Ceramic Arts Queensland Siliceous Award, and Moreton Bay Art Prize.
Currently undertaking a Doctor of Visual Arts at the Queensland College of Art and Design, her research examines the impact of cross-media influences on the creative evolution of contemporary ceramics in the post-digital era.
Artist Statement
This presentation explores the interdisciplinary processes ceramicist and mixed media artist Anna Guthrie employs to advance her contemporary ceramic practice, aligning with
her doctoral practice-led research on the impact of cross-media influences in the post- digital era. Drawing from reflective walking, 2D creative expression, and zine-making, her methodology integrates sensory engagement, narrative exploration, and material experimentation. Guthrie combines traditional ceramic techniques with innovative methods such as experimental printmaking techniques and digital manipulation of hand-
drawn illustrations and photographic reference materials.
Reflective walking serves as a tool for generating ideas and engaging with place space and sensory experience, while 2D creative expression provide platforms for experimentation
and ideation, allowing concepts to evolve into tangible artefacts.
These interdisciplinary practices inform the creation of ceramic vessels, characterised by layered imagery and textured surfaces that merge traditional craftsmanship with digital aesthetics.
Guthrie’s approach demonstrates how synthesising traditional and alternative media expands the possibilities of her ceramic practice.
