About

Cate Cosi is a distinguished ceramic artist renowned for her mastery of Maiolica, a traditional Italian tin-glazed pottery technique. Alongside her late husband, Gigi, Cate co-founded La Maiolica, a gallery and studio in Fremantle, Western Australia, during the 1990s. Their venture introduced Mediterranean pottery to the region, with highly decorative pieces that became synonymous with Fremantle's artistic landscape.

Cate's work is characterised by vibrant colours and intricate designs, reflecting the rich heritage of Maiolica while infusing contemporary Australian influences. Her dedication to this art form has not only preserved its traditional methods but also fostered a deeper appreciation within the local community. Through La Maiolica, Cate and Gigi produced functional and decorative ceramics that captured the essence of both Italian craftsmanship and the unique spirit of Western Australia.

Beyond her studio practice, Cate has shared her extensive experience and journey with Maiolica through workshops and talks, contributing significantly to the ceramic arts community. Her passion for storytelling through pottery continues to inspire both emerging and established artists, ensuring the enduring legacy of this beautiful and historic craft.
