About

Fergus Stewart has been a potter for over 45 years. Born in Aberdeen , Scotland(1958). Stewart trained in Scotland and Australia and established his first independent studio practice Perth(W.A.) In 1983. Later relocating to Canberra where he helped to establish the ceramics worksho at the Strathnairn Arts complex in Holt ACT and lectured part time at The Canberra school of Art ANU During this time Stewart travelled widely in Australia exhibiting and teaching workshops, building  firing wood burning kilns and demonstrating at ceramics conferences in Canberra , Bendigo and Perth.


In 2005 Fergus Stewart returned to Scotland and established Assynt Ceramics Workshop and Gallery at Glencanisp, Lochinver, in the Northwest Highlands.


Since returning to Scotland Stewart has been a regular guest teacher for The Danish Design School,  Bornholm (2001-2011) and Glasgow School of Art Ceramics dept(untill it's closure in 2012) and ha exhibited around Europe, notably in Germany at‘Salzbrand 2006’ a European wide saltglaze survey  exhibition, Hungary 2007/8/ 18 at the International Ceramics Research Centre, Kecskemet, Hung where he was an invited artist and a regular workshop presenter Fergus Stewart,’s work has also been regularly seen in exhibitions in Denmark and the UK and in 2012 h was invited to take part in workshops and exhibitions for The Mungyeong Tea Bowl Festival South Korea.


Stewart's work was also featured with 13 other salt-glaze ceramists from around Europe in ‘Potter an Salt’ in Germany and The Netherlands during 2013/14.


Fergus Stewart is represented in many institutional and private collections.

Artist Statement

I will employ a wide range of traditional pottery Skills and techniques making tea pots , cut- side jars and bowls, oval containers and dishes with lids , jugs and many other functional objects.


I will demonstrate and discuss my approach to raw glazing and application of coloured slips for salt glazing and wood firing
