About
Born in 1958 in North West Tasmania, Ian's journey into pottery was shaped by his parents, who were hobby potters. At the age of 16, Ian was invited to train under renowned Japanese Master potter Shigeo Shiga in Sydney, marking the beginning of his professional career. After three years of training, he returned to Tasmania, where he honed his craft and earned a Fine Art degree from the Tasmanian State Institute of Technology in 1985.
In 1986, Ian established a production studio in the historic town of Stanley, specialising in marine life-inspired ceramics using slip-casting techniques. He relocated his studio several times, settling in Cygnet in 1995. Over the last decade, Ian has opened his studio gallery, where he continues to produce work with a distinctive Japanese influence, blending functionality with artistic creativity.
A recipient of several prestigious awards, Ian was honoured with the World Craft Council Award in 2021 for his outstanding work during the pandemic, followed by the Tasmanian Premier’s Award in 2022 and the Huon 3D Art Award in 2023 for his sculpture "Nest." Ian has also collaborated with the We Ponder Company, creating unique lighting installations and mentoring young potters in the process.
His enthusiasm and commitment is very much reflected in the work he produces.
“My inspiration comes from a seed sown by my parents in my most formative years. I love every second of every day when I touch clay.”
