Artist Statement

Presentation on living and working in a regional or remote area - A podcaster’s perspective.

Listening to a podcast can combat isolation, allowing artists, particularly those in remote and regional areas, to feel connected. This discussion will delve into how this feeling of connection became the catalyst for the creation of the Birds of Clay Podcast. Birds of Clay Podcast was started in early 2024 by Aurora Elwell and Jane Orme. Through negotiating technical elements, learning how to interview, navigating logistical complexity and lots of big drives, they have learnt a great deal. All this has led to new connections and a rich development of both their practice and community.

The panel discussion will explore the reality of makers that live and work in a remote or regional area, exploring how they navigate their creative journeys while physically distanced from larger artistic hubs. We will examine strategies for building community, accessing resources and support, and ways in which isolation influences practice. Through shared experiences, the panel will highlight the resilience, innovation and connections that define the work of artists in remote locations.
