KERAMOS: an ancient Greek word meaning earthenware from which the word ceramics is

derived. In ancient times, clay was a fundamental material and the process of making various items including vessels and tiles was a skilled craft essential for daily life. Clay transforms and

nurtures. It can be easily shaped, making it robust but it can also be fragile, allowing it to be easily damaged.

Curated by Linton and Kay Galleries Cottesloe, KERAMOS is the artist’s response to our connection to the earth. Each ceramicist uses earth, water and fire in their own style, showing a strong engagement to craftsmanship of the past whilst pushing the boundaries of ceramics beyond function and tradition. Their practices explore ideas around our engagement with humanity, our connection to identity and the fragility of our natural

environment.
