Making Mud into Meaning

26 September - 3 October

Lyal Richardson Hall

Making Mud into Meaning brings together the clay artworks of Liddelow Homestead’s Pottery and Hand-building with Clay groups, whose members come from wide cultural and social backgrounds, spanning all ages, abilities and skill levels.

A medium that transcends barriers, clay connects people to earth, the “Now” and to each other, across cultures through touch, storytelling and tradition. Making Mud into Meaning explores how community clay groups also foster deep connections to our sense of well-being and community engagement.

This exhibition showcases personal journeys with clay through heartfelt messages, expressing our members’ love for clay making and the profound impact clay groups have had on their lives. Each piece reflects both personal creativity and the collective spirit that defines our groups. Whether they are new or experienced makers, our members contribute to our collective story of artistic expression and belonging.

From textured surfaces, stunning glazes to intricate forms and pit fired ware, these pieces are more than just ceramic objects; they represent a journey of learning, experimentation and resilience.

This exhibition is a celebration of that journey, where the simple act of making transforms into something deeper: a shared experience, a sense of belonging and ultimately, transforming mud into meaning.
